I was very excited for this, though admittedly worried- it being the screenplay/directorial debut of a brilliant comedian. My worries were put to rest immediately. All too often actors turned director (and sometimes non-actor directors) can't stop themselves from ruining it by putting themselves in the film- even in small cameo parts this is almost always a mistake. Jordan Peele does not make this mistake, or many at all. This is a pretty solid film and uniquely original in today's irritating culture of rehashing the same stupid bullshit over and over and over and over. The scares are plentiful, but don't expect many random jump scares or fake-outs.....the horror here is mostly psychological and very effective. Peele doesn't depend comic relief, though the few times he does it is laugh out loud, pee in your pants style and carries you through some very tense moments. At one point the entire theater erupted in cheers and claps, something that I have not experienced often in a theater. The acting is also very solid, though I feel Bradley Whitford was slightly underutilized. If you haven't seen this, I urge you to get to your nearest theater immediately!!
We've had a lot of laughs tonight, but I'll tell you what's not funny.... killin strippers.
